It's been a while since I've had something to say on the blog that I couldn't just whack up on Instagram, but here it is. This quilt idea came to me last October, while I was on the way to a job interview (no, I didn't get it, but it turns out that was for the best). It was a quick sketch with some very strong and definite requirements (hand applique, dense quilting, just the tiniest bit of colour) that went on to bug me and pick away at me in my sleep. Fortitude

The brewing is finished, and I'm left with (if I may say so myself) a pretty good artisan beer. If you follow me on Instagram (@charlottequilts) then you might have seen more pictures of this than you can stand, but please bear with me while I show some taken with an actual camera. The idea had always been to matchstick quilt the hell out of this thing, both to attach the shreds of fabric and to add more layers to the colour gradation. I used five shades of Aurifil (40 wt) ranging from white to black, with three greys in between. Purple by any other name

Really, Radiant Orchid, really? Just like Emerald, which turned out to actually be more like the bastard lovechild of teal and jade, in my opinion. And don't get me started on Tangerine Tango. I think I'm missing the "give ordinary things fancy names" gene - it must be the scientist in me. That's not to say that I don't love the colour, however. Red-purples are my favourite - they are warm and inviting in a way that blue-purples often aren't.I had a lot of fun designing mini quilts for this challenge and ended up with five options, some of which might turn up around here one way or another in the future.
